What is a Copper Wedding Anniversary?
In Denmark and the other Nordic countries, a Copper Anniversary is
celebrated after 12 ½ years of marriage, i.e. half way to a
Silver Anniversary. In some other countries a Copper Anniversary means
9 years of marriage.
From Ruberto's to Rossini
On February 19th, the wedding reception was held at Ruberto's Italian
restaurant in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. On August 19th, the Copper
Wedding Anniversary dinner will be held at the Ristorante Rossini Italian
restaurant in Ølstykke. Directions for how to get there can be found
here.
Ristorante Rossini has a
homepage
although it seems to only work with Internet Explorer.
Weather?
On February 19, 1994 we were blessed with some unseasonably nice
weather for the wedding. The mercury hit 49°F (9.4°C) for a
high, with a lowest temperature of 22°F (-5.5°C) for the
day. The snow cover was a mere 1 inch (2.5 cm).
This may not seem particulary nice, but considering that a week
earlier the same numbers were max/min 30/7°F (-1.1/-13.9°C)
with a snow cover of 13 inches (33 cm) it really wasn't too bad.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate for the copper anniversary as
well. Since this is Denmark we cannot guarantee anything, other than
the snow cover will probably be equal or less than on our wedding day.
Actual weather forecast can be found
here.

Here is a quick look back on the last 12½ years.
1994
.
|
The big event of 1994 was obviously the wedding itself. It was a
fairly small wedding, but we were very happy with everything from
the church service, the reception, and the honeymoon in Las
Vegas. The picture is from the wedding reception.

1995
.
|
In the spring of 1995 we moved from New Brighton to downtown
Minneapolis. We moved to the apartment on Groveland Terrace that
was to be our home for the following five years in Minnesota. The
location was ideal being close to one workplace negating the need
for an extra car, and both the apartment itself and the
surrounding area (Sculpture Garden, Loring Park, Uptown, etc.) was
quite a step up from our previous home. The picture shows the
apartment building seen from the courtyard.

1996
.
|
1996 saw the first addition to the family. Just before Christmas,
on December 13, Monica was born. Of course this completely changed
everyday life in the family. No more sleeping in on weekends, or
playing Civilization for hours on end. The picture shows Monica
just before leaving the hospital.
|
1997
.
|
In 1997 most of the family focus was on Monica. We were keeping
track of all developments and learning to deal with all the new
challenges of having a child in the family. The picture shows
Monica taking her first steps. It happened in Duluth on our
biannual North Shore fall trip in September, 1997.
|
1998
.
|
As a family we have always enjoyed to travel and see new
things. Before Monica turned two she had already traveled to Iowa,
Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana, as well as
Denmark. Despite limited vacation time we always managed to get
somewhere, and in 1998 we were on a road trip taking us to both
Chicago and St. Louis. The picure is from a river cruise on the
Mississippi in St. Louis.
|
1999
.
|
On March 18, 1999 Tina was born, and we were now a family of
four. Despite Tina being the second child there were still new
situations to adapt to. Monica had to learn how to share the
attention, and the apartment was starting to seem a little
small. The picture shows Tina just before leaving the hospital.
|
2000
.
|
The year 2000 was a year of big changes for the family. When the
year began we were living in Minnesota in a small downtown
apartment with both of us working and the children spending all
day at daycare. When the year ended we were living in Denmark as
suburban houseowners with one parent staying home with the
children.
The picture was shot in April 2000 showing the girls enjoying the
freedom of having a yard.
|
2001
.
|
In 2001 the family grew again. On October 9 Adam was born in
Hillerød, ensuring a clean organization of the family:
"The girls are from America and the boys are from
Denmark."
The birth itself was anything but well-organized. The water broke
in the car, the father did not see the actual birth, etc.
The picture shows Adam ready to leave the hospital and head home
to Ølstykke for the first time.
|
2002
.
|
The unfortunate reality is that no matter where we live we will
always be far away from parts of the family. Fortunately,
practically every year we have travelled or family members have
travelled to visit with us.
The picture is from a visit to Minnesota in October 2002.
|
2003
.
|
One benefit of being a dual-nationality family is that we get to
celebrate more often. We celebrate Halloween, Fastelavn,
Independence Day, Sankt Hans Eve and many more.
The picture is from Thanksgiving 2003.
|
2004
.
|
From Monica's first birthday and forward we have tried to gather
those who live close by using the children's birthday as an
opportunity for seeing the family. The children and us are very
happy that the turnout is always very good.
The picture is from Tina's 5th birthday party in March, 2004.
|
2005
.
|
By August 2005 all three children were no longer home during the
daytime. Adam had started daycare, and Monica and Tina went to
school. In fact, quite a bit of the daily family life evolves
around the children and their activities. Not only school itself
and related after-school events, but also swimming, gymnastics,
choir, etc., not to mention play arrangements, parties and other
events that the family schedule must accomodate.
The picture is from Tina's first day of school in August, 2005.
